Thoughts on Inspiration

My protagonist/heroine, Margeaux Meyer, looked with frustration at her true love, mafia attorney, Tony Moretti.

“You’re so – abstruse!” she declares.

I’m curled up in bed, almost asleep, but my mind is still conjuring intense dialogue between the two characters in my novel.

The mystery of Inspiration is still present in my mind before sleep takes over.  Sometimes Inspiration is elusive, slowly making an appearance only after I commence the work – whether composing the manuscript or working with a paintbrush.

To experience these intense feelings is a privilege for which I’m grateful.  Without this Inspiration and enthusiasm, what would be the source from which to draw upon in writing or art?  I want to persuade the reader or viewer to understand the passion my characters feel or to be captivated by the lush glow of oil paint describing a horse’s graceful power.

The word is based upon the drawing in of our very breath.

To invite Inspiration, I read classical literature or visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art – filling the well, and then drawing from it, as I approach the easel or open my rose gold laptop computer.

With gratitude, I thank the generous artists who shared their knowledge and skill at the Scottsdale Artists’ School.  And thanks also to so many fine writers who published books on writing fiction and memoir.  This generosity is such a gift from those who came before, passing on this mastery to the next generation.
